There were two complete classes at the RM”A” school at San Diego that were dropped on the Arlington. It was the first time the Navy had done anything like that (and the last if I remember right). We were sent to NOB Norfolk to wait for the ship to come up from Alabama for commissioning. We used up all the schools at Norfolk and then they started shipping us TAD everywhere they could think of. This still didn’t take care of everyone. They broke down the barracks cleaning crews into port and starboard with each “watch” working for about 45 minuets every other day. The watch that wasn’t “on” had base liberty but when you work 45 minuets a day there wasn’t much difference between being “on” and “off” except when you were off you couldn’t hang around the barracks. I got pretty good at bowling and lost count of the number of books I read in the library. Sea trials started us moving all around the globe. Gitmo (anyone remember Miss Gitmo?) Jamaica (they wouldn’t allow us to anchor at Montego Bay because we had a rowdy reputation) so they sent us to Kingston. Then back to Norfolk off the North Atlantic cruse I was on watch the night we passed through the English Channel how many know about the French mine field we sailed into and the CO backed us out of without any charts of help from the French. Then back to Norfolk then through the Panama Canal to Pearl then to West Pac and on station. Atlantic cruise and our trip to Lisbon Portugal? I remember that after spending 3 days onshore as part of the Shore Patrol working with the Lisbon Police I was having a hard time understanding English by the time we reported back to the ship. Reason being was that our liberty would commence after we had gotten all of the crew back to the ship which usually took until 0100. Then we would go find a place to spend some time before going back to the Hotel. I believe that the Arlington provided some of the finest Port visits that one could ever ask for. Again Bruce great job on the new message board. Int Qsl? ,Bob Baker,rpbaker@unidial.com Re: Lisbon,Thursday 17-Feb-2000 22:51:06,152.163.204.67 writes,The N. Atlantic cruise included three port visits Lisbon Portugal Bremerhaven Germany and Oslo Norway. Each visit was to be 3 days but thick fog in the English Channel delayed the ship's arrival in Bremerhaven cutting the visit to 2 days. ARLINGTON anchored in the Tagus River in Lisbon and was alongside a pier in the last two. The ship was on three-section duty for the port visits so everybody could get two days liberty (except in Bremerhaven as noted above). I agree with Bob--never before or since have I seen a ship get 3 choice port visits in one cruise. The transit up the fjord to Oslo was a two-hour long sea detail. The scenery made up for the length of the sea detail.,Gordon Kaufman,Krown007@aol.com Re: Lisbon,Tuesday 14-Mar-2000 23:18:08,12.73.241.136 writes,I REMENBER THAT TRIP VERY WELL "THE THREE PORTS THAT WE VISITED WERE JUST GREAT. I definitely remember the North Atlantic cruise and that storm we were in. It was one of the two worst storm I experienced in my 20 years. I remember the merchant marine vessels message stating that they had sighted a "multi antennaed vessel that appeared to be dead in the water". I was an RM2 at the time was assigned to the MAA force for a while but when in Communciations worked in the Crypto Shack for Ens Henry who got so sea sick every time the ship got underway that they had to eventually transfer him to shore duty. What years were you at NAS KWEST? When I left the Arlington in '67 I went to Comphibron Eleven Staff LBEACH for a year then NavCommSta Harold E. Holt W. Australia for a year and then in 1970 I went to NavCommSta KWest. For the first six months I worked at the message center annex on the Naval Air Station Boca Chica. While at Key West I tended bar part time at the American Legion. Bill Howard the leader of a country music band managed the American Legion until he bought the bankrupt Fleet Reserve building and turned it into his own lounge that he called The Big Fleet. My wife (at the time) Shirley tended bar at the Beach Patio Club on the base near the Sonar School. She was the redhead that tended bar there. Don't know if you remember that much or not. Also my nickname while at Key West (which Bill Howard gave to me when I was tending bar at the American legion) was Tripod.
